Teaching Your Bunny: Walking On The Leash

By Claire F.

Besides cats and dogs, rabbits are one of the most popular animals you'll find as pets. But even some bunny parents aren't aware of just how smart their fuzzy family members can be. One of the funnest things to teach your rabbit is to walk on the leash.

1. Introduce the bunny to the leash and harness slowly. Leave it in the bunny's space and let them become desensitized to it. Reward the bunny when they play with the leash or the harness.

2. Place the harness or leash next to or on the rabbit until they either shake it off or leave it be.

3. When the bunny seems used to the harness bein around, put the harness on and let the bunny wear it for an hour or so. Do this once a day.

4. Attatch the leash to the harness and walk and walk the bunny around the home.

5. When ready, take the bunny outside for their first walk. Monitor your bunny and keep them on the grass in open spaces. Don't let them try to take off into bushes or down rain drains.

There is no specific timeframe for when a rabbit will be ready to walk on the leash and some rabbits may learn more quickly than others. As long as you stay consistent with your training, your rabbit will be a leash-walking pro.
